Get Out (2017)

Summary

Jordan Peele's first directional debut is "Get Out". Peele most known work is that of comedy and stepped into to the world of horror and intstantly became a critically acclaimed hit. Get Out is about Chris, young African American who visits his white girlfriends family in a secluded saburb. As Chris spends more time with his family he notices strange behaviors and a deeply disturbing secret of their family.

This film explores the societal issues around racism, classism, and the specific experience about being a black man in America, in the film known as "The Sunken Place". It follows a suspenful plot.

Us (2019)

Summary

The movie "Us" follows a family of four who visit the childhood home of the mother in Santa Cruz, California. However, their vacation ends quickly as it turns into a nightmare, they are met with their doppelgangers and follow them to murder them. Since she was a child she has noticed them and has came back to finish the job.

The theme in this movies explores unity and community within a social class in modern America. The doppelgangers represent a darker version of ourselves that they try to supress or ignore, but the more we do it the worse things get.

Summary

"Nope" is labeled as a neo-Western, located in Agua Dulce, California lives the Haywood family who train horses for a films and television productions. The film follows two siblings and a friend who try and figure out what exactly is in the sky, hidden in a cloud. They discover that it is a UFO, later revealed how it is fed in a terrifying scene. We learn about the person who feeds it, Jupe, and his past in a near death experience with a chimp

This film explores the themes of spectacle and exploitation, in modern society with videos, phones and modern technology we are addicted to seeing, unable to keep our eyes away from drama and peril. It also talks about the erasure in black people in films.
